“Switzerland”
Special Coin
176 years on from the adoption of the Federal Constitution, the Federal Mint Swissmint launched the “Switzerland” special coin on 12 September 2024.
A tribute to modern Switzerland, which is founded on this Federal Constitution. On 12 September 1848, the Federal Diet declared the new Federal Constitution as adopted. This meant that Switzerland became a federal state and the first stable democracy in Europe; the conflict between the liberal and conservative Catholic cantons was over.
The most important pillars of today’s constitutional order were set at that time: the Federal Council as the executive, the Federal Assembly with its two chambers (National Council and Council of States), the principle of the separation of powers, the federalist division of responsibilities between the federal government and the cantons, free elections and the most important fundamental rights of citizens.
Obverse
The obverse shows a symbolic mountain relief representing the Swiss Alps, accompanied by an edelweiss, which signifies courage, strength and adaptation to extreme weather conditions. A rock crystal exemplifies energy and endurance. Railways and roads, with bridges and tunnel entrances, symbolise Switzerland’s dense transport network and the will to overcome the geographical challenges of the mountains. “Swiss Made” cogwheels highlight Switzerland’s tradition of precision in areas such as watchmaking, engineering.
Reverse
The coin shows the Swiss cross and the face value of CHF 20. It is surrounded by the coats of arms of all 26 cantons. The inscription reads “CONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA 2024”. The coin is made of silver with a purity of 999 and bears the mint mark “B” for Swissmint.
Lettered edge
The lettered edge, consisting of the motto “DOMINUS PROVIDEBIT” and 13 stars, is mirror-inverted on the edge of the coin – a unique feature that makes this coin even more valuable. 4,800 “Switzerland” special coins were issued in proof quality in a case, 200 coins in proof quality in a case with artist’s certificate and 7,500 uncirculated coins in a blister pack.
