Sticky fingers –
counterfeit coins

Money-related crime is as old as money itself: coins and medals made of precious metals tempt people to commit theft, robbery and embezzlement. Counterfeit coins intended for circulation undermine trust in currencies. In addition, since the Renaissance, counterfeit coins have been produced specifically for collectors. The exhibition juxtaposes originals and forgeries, and the tools on display provide insights into the techniques used by counterfeiters.

New permanent exhibition
at the Economy Museum in Sweden

Visitors to the MONEY! exhibition can walk through Swedish history and see how money and the economy have changed society and people’s lives. The idea of paying with a banknote initially seemed revolutionary, whereas today we are getting used to the fact that money is becoming invisible. We also take it for granted that we can buy things from the other side of the world. How did that come about?

Collection of Coins and Medals of the Cantonal Museum of Archaeology and History (MCAH), Lausanne

Money as we know it today originated in Asia Minor, in present-day Turkey, around 600 BC. It facilitated trade between people, and its use and production quickly spread throughout the Mediterranean and beyond. The permanent exhibition of the MCAH’s Collection of Coins and Medals invites visitors to discover the history of money from its origins to the present day. There is a special focus on the Vaud coin hoards and finds, presented in the context of their discovery. The role of money in today’s world is highlighted thanks to the central module that forges a link between numismatics and economics.

Bernisches Historisches Museum

The world’s most important collection of Bernese coins and medals. The oldest of the approximately 65,000 objects date from the 6th century BC, while the most recent represent the present day. The collection was started by the Bern city library and found its way into the Bernisches Historisches Museum in 1898. It includes the world’s most important collection of Bernese coins and medals, as well as coin and medal dies.
