How the new “100 years 100-franc Vreneli” came to be
Coin designer Chiara Principe designed the “100 years 100-franc Vreneli” special coin. She has set out for us the five steps involved in bringing this special coin to life.
01 Design I
Hand sketches
“First of all, I immerse myself as deeply as I can into the coin itself, its origins, its history and its beauty”.
02 Design II
Digital sketches
“The greatest challenge was to celebrate the history, the iconic significance and the emotional treasure in a new coin”.
03 Modelling I
Plasticine model*
“Not the profile of a king or a ruler, like on other marengos, but a simple, young girl, with flowing hair and mountains behind her”.
* Plasticine is a putty-like play dough or modelling clay made of calcium salts, vaseline and acids.
04 Modelling II
Plaster model
“The coin celebrating 100 years of the 100-franc Vreneli represents a nation that is firmly rooted in its historical and cultural values and does not shy away from looking beyond these values and into the future with its own identity”.
05 Modelling III
Digital model
“As a woman and an artist, the opportunity to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 100-franc Vreneli was hugely symbolic”.
