In the run-up to St. Nicholas Day 2024 and the publication of this magazine, Swissmint is issuing the last special coin of the year: the \u201cSt. Nicholas\u201d special coin.<\/p>\n<\/div>

The proof quality sets itself apart from the uncirculated quality due to the red colour typical of St. Nicholas, celebrating the centuries-old tradition and patron saint of children. St. Nicholas Day is celebrated in many regions of Switzerland, but it has a special significance in Fribourg and in Central Switzerland.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Obverse
\n<\/strong>The coin shows an image of St. Nicholas, depicted with a mitre and crosier, in bright Samichlaus red (proof quality only). In the background, a picturesque landscape complements the festive motif.<\/p>\n

Reverse
\n<\/strong>The obverse shows St. Nicholas with a child walking together through a village. The inscription reads \u201cCONFOEDERATIO HELVETICA 2024\u201d and the face value is CHF 20. The coin is made of 999 silver and bears the mint mark \u201cB\u201d for Swissmint.<\/p>\n

Lettered edge
\n<\/strong>The edge design features the motto \u201cDOMINUS PROVIDEBIT\u201d and 13 stars.<\/p>\n

5,800 \u201cSt. Nicholas\u201d special coins were issued in proof quality in a case, 200 coins in proof quality in a case with artist\u2019s certificate and 7,500 uncirculated coins in a blister pack.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Is red really the traditional colour for \u201cSamichlaus\u201d?
\n<\/strong>We are positive that it is, because the fabled Bishop Nicholas of Myra is said to have worn a red bishop\u2019s robe. Reason enough to use the typical \u201cSamichlaus\u201d red (proof quality only) on the \u201cSt. Nicholaus\u201d special coin. After the coins have been minted at Swissmint in Bern, they are transported to the Pamp company in Ticino to be printed using digital printers. This process requires digital data for the areas to be printed. A camera is used to detect the position of the coin on the printer and the areas to which colour is to be applied. For an intense luminosity, the areas to be printed are primed with white paint before the Samichlaus red is printed.<\/p>\n

The printer can colour more than 20 coins at a time, and the process takes only a few minutes.
