Since 1848, the Federal Constitution of the Swiss Confederation has organised and governed many aspects of life in Switzerland. Swissmint is celebrating this special anniversary with a special coin.<\/p>\n<\/div>[vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″]

In the name of Almighty God!<\/strong>
\nThe invocation of God is found in the medieval documents of the early Swiss Confederacy. The 1848 confederates carried on this tradition, and as a result the Preamble to the Federal Constitution also begins with the \u201cinvocatio Dei\u201d. Even the stained glass in the dome of the Federal Palace alludes to a higher power: two angels bearing the Swiss coat of arms.<\/p>\n

The soul of our Switzerland<\/strong>
\n\u201cTechnically, the Federal Constitution is a boring legal code,\u201d says Peter Salzmann, the designer of the special coin. \u201cA set of rules we are constantly updating.\u201d Even the Preamble has been revised several times over the past 175 years. \u201cIt is the soul of our Constitution and thus an expression of our society\u2019s understanding of itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″]

A powerful symbol<\/strong>
\nThe design of the obverse of the coin is therefore based on the Preamble: God, creation, unity, peace, solidarity and the passing on of a set of values to future generations \u2013 allegorically depicted, these concepts intertwine to form a highly resonant symbolic whole.<\/p>\n

An angel with clipped wings<\/strong>
\nFor the reverse, the Olten-based designer drew inspiration from the Federal Palace dome. \u201cWe usually see what we want to see,\u201d says Salzmann. As a way of engaging with the debate around the reference to God in the Constitution, he has clipped the wings of an angel. What remains is a familiar figure, serene, secure, relaxed. The angel has become Helvetia, the peacemaker \u2013 a virtue that is more important than ever in these times.<\/p>\n<\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]

On 1 and 2 July 2023, the Swiss Parliament will celebrate the anniversary of the first Federal Constitution with federal government open days, a grand ceremony on Constitution Day and many other events. Here at Swissmint we will be getting involved too, so make sure to note these dates in your diary.<\/p>\n

Take the opportunity to celebrate 175 years of the Federal Constitution with us, while enjoying a stroll along the \u201cBundesmeile\u201d (Federal Mile) and taking a look back at the long history of the Swiss Federal Constitution. You will also have a chance to admire \u2013 and, of course, acquire \u2013 the latest special coins. We hope to meet lots of Swissmint fans in person over these two days.<\/p>\n

What can you expect?<\/strong>
\nIf you visit us on 1 and 2 July 2023, you will be able to purchase the special gold and silver coins marking the 175th anniversary of the Federal Constitution. To give as many people as possible the opportunity to acquire them, we will be splitting the available stock over the two days. Visitors can buy one gold and one silver coin. Any unsold coins will be available from the online shop from 3 July.<\/p>\n
