The gold Vreneli was intended to represent the state of the art of coinage at the time, to be the same size as the largest gold coins of the time and to create a sense of national pride. It was minted without any corresponding national legislation. This coin was a single-year series.

Of the 5,000 coins originally minted, around 1,250 were melted down again. Well-preserved coins are traded for well over CHF 20,000.

<picture></picture>

The 100-franc gold Vreneli
The model on the coin was created by Fritz-Ulysse Landry from Neuchâtel. The original die comes from the Monnaie de Paris. The obverse of the coin, which is the same as the 20-franc gold Vreneli, shows a bust of a woman looking to the left. Her abundant hair is tied up in a plaited braid and her dress is embroidered with edelweiss flowers. This depiction is set against a mountain background. Above the bust is the inscription “HELVETIA” and the artist’s name “F. LANDRY” is engraved along the lower edge on the right.

The reverse of the coin, which is the same as the 10-franc gold Vreneli except for the value, shows the inscription “100 — Fr.” and the year, both positioned horizontally in the centre. The Swiss cross with an aureole is depicted above this. Fitting to the lower curve of the coin are two entwined branches of alpine roses and gentian flowers. The mint mark “B” can be seen at the lower edge.

The lettering on the edge of the coin is raised and reads “DOMINUS / PROVIDEBIT / ”, which translates from the Latin as “The Lord will provide” – a quote from Genesis 22:8.

Technical specifications
CHF 100 face value
Gold 0.900 alloy
2.20 mm thickness
32.258 g weight
35 mm diameter

Save the date:
On 1 December 2024, we will announce the issue date for the “100th anniversary of the 100-franc gold Vreneli” special coin on our social media channels.

[/vc_column][/vc_row]

["post-6796","magazin","type-magazin","status-publish","hentry","thema-interesting-facts
["GET
