Since 1936, we have also minted special coins to commemorate important historical and cultural events and to honour prominent figures. Special 5-franc pieces were minted at irregular intervals until 1963, serving \u2013 to put it bluntly \u2013 as an additional source of revenue for the federal government. After that, annual minting programmes were prepared and presented, aimed at coin collectors in Switzerland and abroad. Whenever possible, there were three issues each year.<\/p>\n<p>The starting point for every idea is a calendar of key dates for major Swiss figures (such as their births and deaths), as well as dates of important historical, cultural or social events. We also look ahead to consider what topics will be of particular interest or what significant social events are taking place around the time of release.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"section__teaser_special\"><div class=\"teaser_special row_simple reverse middle-xs \"><div class=\"teaser_special__media col-l-6 col-xs-12 intro-animation-mobile\"><div class=\"picture_container\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sondermuenze.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/swissmint-idee-neueidee-960x1200pxpx.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sondermuenze.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/swissmint-idee-neueidee-960x1200pxpx.jpg\" alt=\"Ideensuche\" width=\"960\" height=\"1200\"\/><\/picture><\/div><\/div><div class=\"teaser_special__content col-l-6 col-xs-12 intro-animation intro-animation--right\"><div class=\"teaser_special__content__inside\"><p>Once we have come up with an idea, we submit an application to the head of the Federal Department of Finance (FDF). For an application to be accepted, it must satisfy three criteria: be based on coherent and convincing arguments, have a recognisable connection to Switzerland, and be politically neutral.
