The history of special coins goes back a long way. Special 5-franc pieces were minted at irregular intervals until 1963, serving – to put it bluntly – as an additional source of revenue for the federal government. After that, annual minting programmes were prepared and presented, aimed at coin collectors in Switzerland and abroad. Whenever possible, there were three issues each year.
The starting point for every idea is a calendar of key dates for major Swiss figures (such as their births and deaths), as well as dates of important historical, cultural or social events. We also look ahead to consider what topics will be of particular interest or what significant social events are taking place around the time of release.
